What Makes New Yorkers Live Longer?

A recent study by the prestigious British medical magazine, The Lancet, shows that New York City residents are living longer, these days. How come?

“Experts… are crediting Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s health initiatives during the last decade” for making New Yorkers live longer–banning smoking, banning trans-fat, banning soda, and so on. Maybe it only seems longer to those who have to live under the Bloomberg regime. A lot longer.

I do wish the experts would leave the fantasies to us fantasy writers! Hello! Can anybody do simple logic around here? There is no evidence of a cause-and-effect relationship between Bloomberg’s meddling in people’s lives and the length of those lives. There is no longitudinal study. You’d have to follow the lives of people born at the same time those policies were instituted, keep the policies in place throughout those people’s lives, see how long they live–and then compare them to the life-spans of New Yorkers who lived before Bloomberg started banning everything.

It would be just as logical to say New Yorkers’ life-spans have increased since Alex Rodriguez started playing for the Yankees.

In fact, it would be just as true to say they started living longer since my book, Bell Mountain, was published. I knew it had to be good for something beyond mere entertainment!

Please feel free to pass this good news on to your friends who want to live longer.

  1. You seem to be expecting logic and reason to prevail along with wisdom and understanding. don’t bash your head against that rock wall any longer; you only get lumps on the head. LOL Well they have to fill the space with something. Have you tried to stomach the “news” lately?

    1. Lord help me, it’s part of my job to stomach the news! It is certainly no comfort to me to know that the entire ruling class of the Western world is afflicted with insanity.
I suppose things could be worse, however hard it might be to imagine that. Imagine if Mayor Bloomberg got to be president… Never mind, it’s too awful to contemplate.

    2. I was once asked, “Is America today more like 1776 America or the Roman Empire?” I said the Roman Empire. Then I read up on what it was like for Christians before Constantine and I think they had it a lot worse than we do being ruled by insane people.

    3. Our founders and the Constitution, and the grace of God, are the reasons we don’t have it as bad as it was in the Roman Empire.

  2. My goodness, couldn’t it just be “God’s Will” that certain people live longer. Mayor Bloomberg needs a lesson in humility.

  3. I’m here to celebrate the 9000th hit! Now you can say you have “over 9000” hits, which is a “meme” that was invented by internet kids with too much time on their hands. I didn’t get where I am today by having too much time on my hands.

    1. Actually, I have hardly any time on my hands at all. I’m not even sure what a “meme” is. Does it have something to do with “gravitas”?

    2. Your comment was made in 2012. It’ now 2018 and I still don’t know what a meme is.

    3. A meme is basically a picture with a saying to go along with it, like “Hillary wins free trip to Gitmo.” and the picture is of her behind bars. Usually memes are used for humor or satire. Get a Twitter account and you will have memes galore.

  4. You may be on to something, Lee. Those of us who read your Bell Mountain series live longer – we have to make it to the next book, and the next, and the next . . . 🙂

  5. People see what they hope to see. Like you said, a serious longitudinal study would be required to make any sense of this matter and even that would be subject to interpretation.
