Her Lifelong Dream Was… to be Blind

Here’s old Blind Pew from Treasure Island. Do you think he had to ask a psychologist to do this to him?

What do you think of this? “A North Carolina woman says she is happier than ever after fulfilling her lifelong wish of becoming blind.” ( http://fox4kc.com/2015/10/01/woman-desperate-to-be-blind-had-drain-cleaner-poured-in-eyes-now-happier-than-ever/ )

How did she fulfill her wish?

She hooked up with “a psychologist” in 2006–a man without even a vestige of integrity or common decency– who was willing to “help” her by first numbing her eyes and then dripping drain-cleaner into her eyes.

And it’s all A-OK, see, all tickety-boo, and it’s not crazy and it’s not perverted–because, you see, this blind-on-purpose woman has (trumpet fanfare, please) Body Integrity Identity Disorder.

“I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born,” she says.

By cracky, they can make up a name for just about anything, these days. She ain’t crazy, she ain’t mad, she ain’t wacko, she ain’t bad–why, she just has a Disorder. There’s no more sin; there’s only this or that Disorder. (See also http://leeduigon.com/2015/06/23/an-all-new-perversion-become-disabled-on-purpose/ , for other loopy characters who want their perfectly healthy limbs amputated.)

I wonder when some judge will order the rest of us to celebrate this lifestyle and take an active part in it.

  1. By giving every weird idea in a person’s head a name (even if it has ‘disorder’ in the name), it validates their ideas and brings them that much closer to acceptance and normalization …

  2. Reblogged this on Serve Him in the Waiting and commented:
Perhaps the “strong delusion” for those who love not the truth, is more individualized than we imagine. Willful ignorance, and willful blindness are not that much different one from another. She just took it to the extreme. Wow. The ultimate end for all truth-rejecters is madness of one form or another. They say that’s the difference between those who are truly insane and those who merely feel like they are “losing it”. Truly insane don’t know they are nuts. Their lunacy makes absolute logical sense to them. By the way,you are the only person in the world other than my Mom that I have ever heard use that phrase “by cracky”. LOL

    1. There are just so many vernacular exclamations that I mustn’t use, so I’m sort of pushed into a corner with “by cracky.”

Believe me, writing about the stuff I write about, some kind of exclamation is usually necessary.

  3. This sounds like a disorder to me, but nothing so esoteric as Body Indentity Integrity Disorder. How about good old fashioned OCD, someone obsesses about a notion until it becomes real.

When a person suffers an amputation, there is a period of time when the body map of the brain and the body itself are out of sync with one another. If it’s a major loss, it can take years before the person’s brain quits trying to use something that is no longer there. Because the hands use a lot of the brain’s motor control capability, serious hand injuries can be very emotionally difficult apart from the real-world practical loss of function from the injury itself.

However, after a number of years, the brain redraws its map and quits trying to use something that is no longer physically present. This added emotional distress dissipates and the person, although still dealing with the effects of the loss, can do so without emotional distress and even may make light of their situation. I met a man that lost a foot when he was quite young. Now, decades later, he describes himself as 6’ 1”, minus a foot. He’s not happy for his loss, but he accepts it philosophically and with a bit of grace and humor.

There may be a grain of truth to the notion that some people have Body Integrity Indentity issues, but a normal, mentally healthy individual can deal with these. For example, I wanted to be like my older cousin, who was slight, but handsome. However, I turned out more like the captain of the high school football team, not so large that I’m unusual, but definitely not the lithe person I had hoped to be. I had to deal with the fact that I resemble several of my cousins, but not the cousin that looked like a gymnast.

By what can only be described as a miracle, I managed to do this without years of public assistance, psychological treatment or even bulk purchases of Play-Doh. I didn’t have any safe spaces and I was never in a support group of people that admired an older cousin that looked like a gymnast but had to suffer the grief of not growing up to resemble him. Had I been more business savvy, I could have made the daytime TV rounds and cleaned up on the appearance fees before declaring myself adapted to the cruel hoax nature played on me by making me a big, strong guy. 🙂 (Dabs tears from eyes.) 🙂

Sometimes the answer to distress is to thought it out and to get over it. Don Henley and Glen Frey even wrote a song about this and recorded it with the Eagles.

    LYRICS

I turn on the tube and what do I see
A whole lotta people cryin’ “Don’t blame me”
They point their crooked little fingers at everybody else
Spend all their time feelin’ sorry for themselves
Victim of this, victim of that
Your momma’s too thin; your daddy’s too fat
    Get over it
    Get over it
All this whinin’ and cryin’ and pitchin’ a fit
Get over it, get over it

You say you haven’t been the same since you had your little crash
But you might feel better if they gave you some cash
The more I think about it, Old Billy was right
Let’s kill all the lawyers, kill ’em tonight
You don’t want to work; you want to live like a king
But the big, bad world doesn’t owe you a thing
    Get over it
    Get over it
If you don’t want to play, then you might as well split
Get over it, get over it

    Chorus
It’s like going to confession every time I hear you speak
You’re makin’ the most of your losin’ streak
Some call it sick, but I call it weak

(Cool Guitar solo by Don Felder)

You drag it around like a ball and chain
You wallow in the guilt; you wallow in the pain
You wave it like a flag, you wear it like a crown
Got your mind in the gutter, bringin’ everybody down
Complain about the present and blame it on the past
I’d like to find your inner child and kick its little ass
    Get over it
    Get over it
All this bitchin’ and moanin’ and pitchin’ a fit
Get over it, get over it
    Get over it
    Get over it
It’s gotta stop sometime, so why don’t you quit
Get over it, get over it
    Get over it
Songwriters: Glenn Frey / Don Henley

It’s a hard rockin’ song, but that only helps to deliver the message.

In my humble opinion, people claiming such a disorder should be treated by competent professionals, and I don’t mean some mollycoddling enabler with a PHD in psych. Much of the backbone I have came from the examples, and even the discipline, of people I worked with and learned from. I had to be tough on myself in order to grow up and face this world. Fortunately I was around some tough and determined examples in those years and learned to be the man that I am.

  4. Oh my goodness! There’s so much disorder here that all I can say is the disorder IS the disorder.

Unknowable, those were some great lyrics! 🙂

    1. Considering that Don Henley is aligned with political causes of the left and the late Glen Frey was at least as liberal as Henley, it’s amazing that they came up with this, but they did.

  5. C.S. Lewis discovered that the modern man has no guilt compared to people in the apostles’ day. And Sigmund Freud made his living by teaching modern man how to get rid of his imagined guilt. “Do what thou wilt” is the motto of the Satanic church. Popular icons like Jay-Z where the motto on their clothes. But I have to admit, this story of the woman intentionally having herself blinded did shock me.
