Gotta Blog This!

Permit me this small self-indulgence.

A reproduction of this painting–Swan Lake, by Konrad Muller-Kurzwelly, a 19th century German landscape artist–used to hang in my family’s living room for as long as I can remember. And I loved it! I loved to look at it and imagine myself going into the painting, I guess to feed the swans. It always gave me a deep sense of peace.

I’m posting it here in case I should never find it again.

  1. Thank you for sharing. What a wonderful memory to carry with you. It really is peaceful, and swans are such graceful creatures.

We had a photograph (my dad, who was a photographer, took the picture, enlarged and developed it) that hung above our sofa in our family room. It was similar – he had taken it at Letchworth Park in the fall where the stream went through. I knew the place because my parents would bring us there as children and we always loved it there.

    1. The original went at auction in 2004 for about 400 $US. The auction house was Penney’s (or Penny’s?) in Canada, which has since gone bust.

Copies (usually old cheap chromographs) sometimes show up on eBay.

    2. The original went at auction in December 2004 for about 400 $US. The auction house was Penney’s (or Penny’s?) in I believe Montreal. Old cheap prints of this (usually chromographs) sometimes show up on eBay. It’s true name is “Swans Along the River at Sunset”.

  2. My mother in law just pulled this picture out from the closet and had me look it up for her. Your blog popped up! She would love for you to have it 🙂 E-mail me your address and she’ll mail it to you. I don’t think she wants anything for it, maybe shipping cost. Hope to hear from you soon!

    1. Now that’s a very nice offer, and it warms my heart to read it. But before I say anything more, I’ll have to make sure it’s all right with my wife: we don’t have a lot of space in this apartment, and as I recall it, it was a rather large picture. Please thank your mother-in-law for me.

    2. Chrissy, my wife says OK, so I would indeed love to have that picture. We don’t mind paying the shipping.
One thing, though–I can’t email you because I don’t have your address.
You can either provide it here, and I’ll delete it after I write it down, or you can email it to me at leeduigon@verizon.net
      Again, thank you very much!

  3. My parents had this painting hanging in our living room when I was growing up. I missed a chance to buy it yesterday. I am so mad at myself. I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get one.

    1. In response to the post you just read, a reader contacted me and send me her painting. She was moving, and didn’t want to take it with her, so now it’s in my living room. So be hopeful, Christine–someone might see this and contact you through my blog.
