Just Because You’re a Billionaire Doesn’t Mean You’re Not a Ninny

Billionaire Elon Musk, taking a few minutes off selling us his self-driving cars, has warned the human race to “merge with machines or become irrelevant” ( http://www.cnbc.com/2017/02/13/elon-musk-humans-merge-machines-cyborg-artificial-intelligence-robots.html ).

Well, dog my cats, some of us are already irrelevant, have been for a long time, and it doesn’t seem to have done us any harm.

Prattling on about “the need for humans to evolve”–into what? mud puppies?–Musk warns that Artificial Intelligence is already way smarter than people and will likely replace us altogether unless we can find some way to turn ourselves into cyborgs or something. And then we’ll be as smart as AI and, well–be sort of gods, don’t you know. Just like the Serpent in the Garden promised. (Genesis 3:5)

Actually, I’m much more worried about self-driving cars that will take you someplace where you don’t want to go and you won’t be able to stop ’em.

  1. Musk is just like a self-driving car – trying to take us where HE wants us to go. Just another “ninny” billionaire trying to play God by “evolving” what he cannot create.

  2. It struck me this morning; there are a lot of people that WANT, even crave, MORE human rulership. Self-driving cars and the like boil down to allowing someone else to make our decisions for us and to take on our responsibilities.

In the early years of Nazi Germany, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote about the way that generation seemed to crave human authority. Eventually, he was executed.

In 1988, an Air France demonstration flight at the Habsheim Air Show crashed. The Airbus A-320 airplane had a computerized flight control system capable of overriding the pilot’s control inputs. They made a low pass over the airshow and the airplane decided it must be time to land, so it did (right into a forest) . . . with the pilot desperately trying to get the plane to climb.

    I think I’ll be giving self-driving cars a pass.
