A Nice Pet Snapping Turtle

Snapping turtles have a reputation for being ornery; but check out this 40-pounder having a cozy time with his owner. The turtle is, in short, a pet. And far from biting your fingers off, he likes getting petted.

I’ve always found snappers among the easiest turtles to tame. Although they are water turtles, they’re pretty much at home on land, too. So you can let them stroll around.

The point is: almost all animals respond to love, gentleness, and affection. Even some of the animals that you look at and say, “Oh, no way!”

This is an aspect of God’s creation–a distinguishing mark of His handiwork.

We call it love.

  1. What a great video. He is obviously very much a pet.

Years ago, while visiting the Midwest, I caught a snapping turtle about half that size. I keep him for a few hours in order to show him to some friends, then I walked over to the lake across the street and released him.

The water was crystal clear and I could watch it’s every move. As soon as it hit the water, it swam a good 20 – 30 feet away, quite rapidly, then turned back and gave me the dirtiest look I’ve ever seen a reptile give, before diving deep and swimming out of sight.

God is love, and love seems to be a part of his creations. I recently heard that rattlesnakes, whom tend to winter in huge snake pits, will bask with the snakes that are siblings. Now there are few things as behaviorally simple as a snake, but even these very simple animals apparently have a sense of family.

I know that I love my cat, and obviously she is very attached to me. Occasionally, she will be playing with one of her cat toys and I’ll get down on the floor and join in. Immediately, she begins to purr profusely and obviously enjoys my company. It makes me feel quite good that I can contribute to her happiness.

    1. The one I caught was definitely NOT purring. 🙂 I’ve been in a life or death fight with a rattlesnake that was trying its best to kill me, but the glare that snapping turtle gave me was much scarier.

  2. This is so sweet. People can make all the difference in how an animal reacts to u. Show love and they will most likely show it back 🙂
