Requested by “thewhiterabbit,” Hark! The Herald Angels Sing–I hope you like this rendition by Amy Grant.
Charles Wesley published the lyrics to this Christmas hymn back in 1739, and Felix Mendelssohn composed the familiar melody 100 years later.
Would you believe we used to be allowed to sing this in… school?
We used to sing it in school, too — and my grade school was about 1/3 Jewish, while I myself was being raised as a devout atheist. And guess what? No one was offended. We all enjoyed the music, and the Christians rejoiced in the words as well.
But that, of course, was before schools were made “diverse” and “inclusive,” i.e., monolithic and exclusionary.
Yep, if they get any more “inclusive” nobody will fit in.
I attended an Amy Grant concert one summer where she and her former husband sang some Christmas songs because they sang them all year round. P.S. I requested “It Came Upon The Midnight Clear” but this one was just as good!
Now how did I get that wrong? I’ll post your request, I promise. I have a head like a sieve, this week.
