By Request, ‘The Boar’s Head Carol’

Phoebe has requested The Boar’s Head Carol, sung by the Robert Shaw Chorale. This English Christmas carol goes back at least to the 15th century and very probably earlier. It early became associated with St. Stephen’s Day, Dec. 26.

  1. Oh, thank you, Lee! This brings back so many wonderful memories. (No, not of eating boar’s heads or living in the 15th century — I’m not THAT old.) My mother, staunch atheist though she was, always enjoyed listening to carols, and we often adapted some of them to everyday events during the rest of the year. In those days (okay, maybe I AM “that old”), even militant atheists like my mother could enjoy good Christian music without getting offended, just because it was good music. The fact that it also promoted the better side of human nature was a plus.
