Crime! Teaching Dog to be a Nazi

But can he goose-step?

A man in Scotland, loosely described as a “YouTube comedian,” has been convicted of a hate crime… for allegedly teaching his girlfriend’s little pug dog to make a Nazi salute (http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2018/03/21/youtube-comedian-convicted-hate-crime-after-teaching-nazi-salute-to-dog.html). The, er, authorities called it “grossly offensive,” and have set April 23 as his sentencing date.

“Achtung, Sturmbannfuhrer Bowser! Where are those tanks I ordered?”

“Woof-woof!”

How ridiculous is this? Ooh! It’s a violation of the Communications Act! Government must approve all communications!

It ought to lead to some intriguing conversations among inmates of the Big House.

“So what are you in for?” asks the armed robber.

“Teaching my girlfriend’s dog to be a Nazi.”

Who are the fascists here, anyway?

The guy says it was just a joke. In poor taste, yes. But if they’re going to start jailing everybody who tells a joke that’s in poor taste, well–!

A trivial story, you might say. But crazed government grows not by leaps and bounds, but by one tiny little step after another.

  1. This is a strange one. Let me start by stating I have literally told guests in my home that unit-Jewish comments would result in them being asked to leave. I have very strong feelings about this matter and will not joke about it. A friend, whom was raised in the Jewish faith is currently dealing with a daughter whom faces hostility at school because she is Jewish.

What this guy did was incredibly stupid. There are some things that you just don’t joke about and, in my humble opinion, anything related to the Nazis is precarious turf, at best. Mel Brooks might be able to get away with some gags at Hitler’s expense, but he is Jewish and fought in WW II.

The gesture pictured is one that dogs naturally make. In and of itself, it’s no cause for offense, it’s simply a dog lifting its paw. Training the dog to do it on command is no trick and the dog doesn’t know the symbolic meaning of any words, it does understand signals and can thusly be trained to follow voice commands.

So, as I see it, we have a dog making a natural movement and being praised for it by a person whom employed very poor judgement and decided to tie this to some phrases which were used in Nazi Germany. Stupid? Yes! Criminal? I don’t see how.

If I create a video of stupid behavior on my part and it harms my reputation, that is no one’s fault but my own. Frankly, I have no sympathy for this fellow, he has very poor judgment and probably should not be afforded much responsibility in the foreseeable future, but I don’t see this as a crime. The minute we give up freedom of speech, even one iota of free speech, we are choosing a path which will not be good for anyone.
