Cats and dogs are mammals. They’re smart. It won’t take them long to figure out what a baby is, if they’ve never met one before. That’s when the cuddling starts. The baby will figure it out pretty quickly, too. But that very first time–well, it’s natural to be a little skittish. Or just a bit excited.
It never ceases to amaze me how animals act the first time they see a human baby. They seem to know that it’s very young and they seem very careful. It’s hard to know how much they understand, but they seem to know exactly how to act in that unfamiliar situation.

Wow! It worked. I have been reading the posts, but couldn’t respond. Now that I’m back, I can say I still love the cat stories. I think cats can sense the helplessness and vulnerability of babies, and apparently there is a built-in “gentle” response.
Undoubtedly. I have had cats behave exceptionally gently when I’m not feeling well. They seem to know.
Oh, yes–your cats do take care of you when you’re sick. They know, all right.
I had minor surgery some years ago. My cat stayed right next to me the first few days and never seemed to tire of the duty. As I got better, she seemed to understand and spent more time away from me, but still kept an eye on me. I told people that I was cared for by a nurse-cat.
God knew when He gave us these wonderful creatures what a blessing they would be. 🙂
I agree. They seem to be made in such a way as to be very useful living in close quarters with humans. Cats are all but essential to the bulk storage of grains. Dogs are very useful in helping with livestock. These are made for us.
