Joshua requested this one, O Come, O Come Emmanuel, performed by Enya. This hymn, originally an ancient Basque hymn, goes all the way back to the 8th century. It was the high point of my 7th-grade class’s Christmas concert. But we’re not allowed to have those anymore.
I like this version of the song.
This is an Advent, not a Christmas carol. I love it too and it is so appropriate to sing during the 40 days of Advent.

“A house of prayer for all nations–” This is how it’s done.
In his historical novel, “Taiko,” Eiji Yoshikawa says the Church had a golden opportunity to convert Japan to Christianity, before the Tokugawa Shogunate was established. Odo Nobunaga, then the most powerful leader in Japan, was friendly to the missionaries. But the Tokugawas launched a deadly persecution which caused the Church in Europe to abandon its efforts.
I can’t vouch for the truth of that scenario, but I’m sure Mr. Yoshikawa knew a lot more about it than I do.
