And the Christmas Carol Contest rolls on, with this request by Phoebe: Away in a Manger. I thought this John Denver rendition might be nice.

This carol never fails to move me. It’s one of my very earliest memories.

  2. Thank you, Lee. I’ve always loved this one, even (for some reason) in my childhood long before I became a Christian. Something about the small and seemingly powerless holding the secrets and power of the universe…. It must have been God’s “still, small voice” calling to me even then in the void of my atheism.

    2. Which brings to mind another carol I’d like to request for tomorrow: “Masters in This Hall,” preferably a version with the lyrics displayed, since many arrangements kind of blur the words. (I think the Robert Shaw Chorale has one with the lyrics.) The lines I’m thinking of are in the refrain: “God has lifted up the poor and has cast a-down the proud.”

    3. Oh! I haven’t heard that in years! Great choice, definitely No. 1 for tomorrow morning. Thanks, Phoebe, I wouldn’t have remembered it.

    4. Come to think of it, the British sing that carol with an altogether different melody, so there are American and English versions of it–both lovely.
