‘O, Worship the King’

In the absence of any reader requests, let me start the day with one of my favorites–O, Worship the King: the first hymn I learned to play on my harmonica. Singing by the choir and congregation at the Durham Road Baptist Church. Gorgeous background sets by God the Father, maker of heaven and earth.

    1. I’ll fix that right away!
Yes, there are a couple of different melodies. With other hymns, it’s the same melody for a lot of different sets of lyrics.

  1. I’ve always been fond of this hymn because we learned it in high school, in one of our required choral music classes. Of course, I was an atheist then, as were many of my classmates, but we didn’t get all bent out of shape (i.e., “triggered”) at having to sing a religious song. After all, we were all required to take Latin every year, too, and we didn’t think we were being forced to become pagans. Ovid and Virgil were literature; hymns and oratorio selections were music. It was all beauty. So?

The world really was a different place back then (1950s).

    1. Oh, and we also sang religious songs and stood for the reading of a psalm at assembly in grade school (1940s). And no one complained, not even my militant atheist mother, who thought the psalms were beautiful poetry.

    2. I remember that world. It was better! Our dentistry today is better, and our chess notation, but that’s about it.
