By Request, ‘Just a Closer Walk with Thee’

Requested by Phoebe: Just a Closer Walk with Thee, sung by Carroll Roberson. There are a lot of performers who sing this one. I’d never heard it before; but I love the painting illustrating the song.

Thank you, Lee. I love all these hymns that talk about Jesus walking with us, being near us, just being WITH us. In these times of isolation for many of us, maybe it’s a good thing to be reminded that Jesus is always present, always walking with us, sitting near us, waiting for us to notice Him and respond.

I’ll always remember one incident from the forced death of Terri Schiavo. The decision had come down to proceed with her starvation and dehydration, and to prohibit all her family and friends who’d been trying to save her from being near her. As they were being expelled from her hospital room, Fr. Pavone of the Priests for Life managed to say to her, “Remember, Terri, even though we can’t be with you any more, Jesus will always be right there with you.” And Terri smiled — even though she was supposedly in a “vegetative state.” Then her husband and his lawyers and hired medicos proceeded to kill her.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to bring up something so sad today. But I think of it often when I need to remember Jesus’ constant presence myself.

That was one of the most shameful incidents in American history. I covered it for Chalcedon. Gov. Jeb! Bush couldn’t save her. Nobody in authority tried very hard. That’s what made it a disgrace.
