A Lot of Today Was Wasted

It is very frustrating to waste a day.

The accountant’s office told me this morning they would send someone to pick up our tax forms.  I ended up waiting until 3:30.

Needless to say, I couldn’t do much but wait–I should have asked for a time frame, then would have been able to get out and do something.

And I seem to have ants in my kitchen.  Ants?  Now?  When it goes down to 7 degrees at night?  They are very small black ants (not carpenter ants) and I spent some time strategically wiping down some areas with oil of peppermint.

I have never had to deal with this before, and somehow I think it’s related to the unusual weather and the snow cover on the ground outside.   None of that has ever melted.

If anyone has any input about how to rectify this, let me know.  I know I had ants in the summer one time, but the oil of peppermint got rid of them in one application.

Another first of the type of first you don’t need.

See you tomorrow.

God bless everybody.

  1. You might try Terro. It is not toxic, it uses a sweet liquid that contains Borax, which upsets the ant’s digestive system and kills them off. I use these all the time.

    1. I just ordered some more from Amazon, myself. There are some tiny ants, in these parts, and I saw a few yesterday. I had some outdoor Terro, which uses the same Borax, but is designed to be driven into the soil. So I broke one open and took care of the immediate problem.

The good news is that this stuff tends to work very fast. Because it’s not toxic, it can be used in the kitchen, safely. The challenge, around here, are fire ants. Those aren’t so easy to get rid of.

    2. Fire ants can be very problematic. Their bite can be very painful. I have several colonies in my yard and they are tenacious little monsters.

    3. You’ve probably heard the expression, “ants in your pants”. Well, I’ve lived it. I was working in rural Colorado and accidentally got too close to an anthill, of big, red, very nasty ants. Fortunately, I was right next to my work truck, and I literally shed my jeans, before jumping inside. I shook the jeans out to rid them of the little red devils, and was able to re-robe and continue my day’s work. It’s hilarious in retrospect, but it wasn’t so funny at the time. Good thing I was in a remote area and didn’t attract the attention of any onlookers. 🙂

    4. I was the most clean cut kid imaginable, in my teens, but when I was pulled over by the CSP, for no actual reason, that cop went over my ‘57 Chevy with a fine tooth comb. It was intimidation, plain and simple, but I had to take it, plain and simple. In those days, the Colorado State Cops were notoriously tough. I once was pulled over while driving a pickup owned by a public utility, as part of my job. Normally, most police treated utility workers deferentially, but this guy was nasty. He was also quite distinct in appearance, and his boss got to hear a complaint about his conduct, the very next morning. I never had a problem with him, after that.

Like I said, most police treated utility employees very well. They knew that we weren’t likely to make trouble, and they knew that we were out there working for the public, just like they were, but some of the Colorado State Patrol acted like the rest of the world were not to be trusted. To the best of my knowledge, they’ve lightened up a bit since then, but I prefer to avoid meeting any of them.

  2. Our snow, that turned to pure ice has finally melted. Today it was 70* with deep blue skies and a nice breeze – felt just like a Spring Day! May nice weather come your way also.
