It could well be that once the cat relaxed and got a good sense of that person’s scent, it triggered a memory of being cared for and safe. A great story.
That’s what I think happened, too. One the poor cat was able to feel safe, the memories came back.
Scent is very important to most animals. Once that cat got close enough, it may have jarred some memories.
That cat really deserves happiness.
