First it was the Pope suggesting the Roman Catholic Church should chill out on such matters as sodomy, adultery, and abortion.
Now the Southern Baptist Conference has one-upped him. The new honcho of the SBC’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, Russell Moore, recently called for his church to raise the white flag on the whole culture war, and to be “winsome”–I don’t know about you, but I have really begun to hate that word–so as not to turn off “young believers” who have spent most of their lives in public schools learning that fornication is a virtue and the Bible is both fiction and hate speech.
To help the institutional churches express themselves more clearly, a new interdenominational hymn has been written: Throwing in the Towel, to be sung to the tune of Bringing in the Sheaves. Here are the lyrics.
Triumph for abortion, joy for same-sex “marriage,”
Now we understand: the bad guys always win.
We the church surrender, we the church cry “uncle!”
Now we understand there’s no such thing as sin.

Great sarcasm, Lee! And a really good message. I, too, was troubled when I saw that news item a few days ago. I’m not against treating unbelievers with respect (1 Pet 3:15), but if “respect” is defined as “never doing anything that offends”, then we’ve been neutralized! Jesus’ treatment of people ran the gamut from gentleness to frontal attack. May we have the discernment, wisdom and courage to know when to employ each!
Russell Moore does not speak for anyone but himself. Please know that. I have been a Southern Baptist longer than he has been alive, and we as a group are not throwing in the towel.

Well said! If there are enough people with the discernment to see the sarcasm, we still have an open door and, whether we have or not, it’s not an option to “throw in the towel.” After all, in the long run, WE are not the determiners as to who wins, so: “If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8: 31)

Your sarcasm is right on the money, Lee. A legacy of these churches (and it irks me to call them churches) is our current moral-less society. They have given us LGBTQ, gay marriage, abortion, liberal courts, etc. But we have Jesus always to cling to. I hope this article edifies everyone:

I’ve interviewed Richard Land, and thought he was pretty solid. I have not interviewed Russell Moore, who is the towel-throwing culprit in this article.
