Memory Lane: Tetherball

You don’t have to be human to enjoy a game of tetherball. See? Even dogs can play it.

Tetherball was one of the fun things we had on the playground in the summer, way back when. I couldn’t find any video of the kind of tetherball we had–small ball on a cord, and you hit it with paddles. Now they’ve made it more like volleyball.

One thing about growing up next to a playground–there was always something to play. Tetherball, horseshoes, shuffleboard, volleyball, badminton, swings, merry-go-round, sliding board–uh-oh: no electronics! You actually had to get up off the couch to play these games.

I do miss them!

  1. This is exactly what I have been telling my son that he needs to get for his Aussie who is so playful, so hyper and so into games. He has bought her frisbees, plastic bones, etc. but this is what would really keep her busy.

  2. That lighter colored dog seemed quite effective.

I checked, and it appears that the game of tether ball has not been created as a computer game. This is reassuring, to say the least.

  3. We never had a tether ball set in my neighborhood, but I do remember the hand-held paddle ball toys. In fact, I just checked at Amazon, and you can still get them. I used to be pretty good at the game. The only problem with it was that after you’d been playing for a few hours, you couldn’t get the thudding rhythm out of your system for the rest of the day.

  4. I loved tether ball in the early grades because I was taller than most everyone else so it was easy to win. Later I was surpassed in size so I switched to Dodge Ball and Softball.
