A Very Bad Shock (and Prayer Request)

We got a bad shock yesterday evening when we learned that our neighbor, Oscar, had been killed earlier that day. Riding his electric tricycle on the highway, a large truck ran him over. He was only 44 years old. Last month another member of our immediate neighborhood died suddenly; and he was 34.

We live in a fallen world, polluted by sin, and it’s very dangerous. Suddenly someone with whom we lived and interacted every day is taken from us. I know I’ll find myself looking for him, but he won’t be here anymore.

Oscar and his wife, Wendy, had chronic health problems and lived on disability benefits. Now Wendy is a widow. She and Oscar were very active in their church, as far as her health allowed. Please join me in prayer for her.

O Lord our God! We don’t know why these terrible things happen in the world: it’s very hard for us to accept them. Please, Father, be with Wendy now, save her soul from falling into despair, strengthen her family and her church, that they might be moved to take care of her. Lord, this poor woman has had a very, very hard time in life, and now she’s lost her husband. Now deliver her, O God. Deliver her. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Amen to Lee’s prayer! We know, Lord, that Wendy is in Your very capable hands and that you will not leave her. Bring helpers alongside her now who will have the wherewithal to guide and help her in this new phase of her life. Comfort her heart and thank You. In the name of Yeshua, amen.

  2. American roads are VERY dangerous. Distracted drivers (phones), drunks and illegals who can’t drive but do so anyway make it dangerous to be on the road in a vehicle, never mind a bicycle!

    1. And we have states handing out drivers’ licenses to illegals, because it’s a way of getting them into the voting booth to vote for Democrats.

  3. Amen. Heavenly Father, we can sympathize with fellow human beings, knowing we are inadequate to bring real assistance, but we have the power of prayer, which gift is priceless,, and we now offer up to You, our prayer for this stricken one and ask for your mercy and guidance, your peace and comfort, strength and wisdom for the difficult days ahead. In the mighty name of our Lord, Yeshua. Amen.

    1. We’re having a hard time accepting this–someone you see and interact with every day, for years, suddenly taken. We’ve been praying on and off all day.

  4. I’m sorry you had this experience. A double whammy. I pray for the people left behind. And I pray for you as well as I know you care and empathize with their pain.

  5. This is awful, Lee. I’m so sorry for your loss and Wendy’s. I will definitely be praying. The father-in-law of one of my readers passed away yesterday also from cancer. So early in the new year, and there is already much sorrow. It is indeed difficult to understand why God allows such things to happen, especially to Godly people. I suppose we’ll be able to grasp it one day, but for now all we can do is pray through the heartbreak.

    1. It’s not that Oscar and I were close friends, but I did see him and talk with him every day–and it’s hard to believe he’s gone. So suddenly! But he insisted on taking that confounded battery-powered tricycle out onto the highway, and no one could talk him out of it, though several people tried. I didn’t know he was doing that, or I’d have tried, too.

    2. Yeah, that’s a really risky thing to do. The highway is hazardous enough in a car where you at least have some protection. Even when you aren’t close to someone, a sudden tragic death is always a shock. I expect it will take a while for this to really sink in.
