More Panic

We did our regular weekend grocery shopping this morning instead of tomorrow, hoping to beat the crowds. In this hope we were disappointed.

It’s a good thing we didn’t need toilet paper, because there wasn’t any–sold out to the last roll. *Sigh*  Didn’t beat the crowds, either.

Most of the people there–not all of them–tried to remain polite and good-natured, and most succeeded. The lines at the checkout counters were just short of impassable. And most of the carts were filled to the brim.

It’s all a panic over coronavirus. Many more people get killed by the flu every year, but nobody panics over that. That’s because flu happens every year and it’s not big news. Coronavirus is perceived as something new–and I don’t know what people are expecting from it. Doomsday? “Bring out your dead, bring out your dead”?

Which leads me to another post…

  1. Wow, I haven’t seen anything like this in our area yet. It may be coming,
    but so far, so good.

    1. I just read it. It’s a masterpiece of insight, common sense and levity. I’m going shopping – where the shelves are full.

    1. Yes, I have noticed that all that news about uprisings in Hong Kong and southern China completely dried up and blew away when the coronavirus scare came along. We really don’t know what’s going on in China.

  4. I’m in rural Utah where we havnt been effected (only a few cases in Utah so far and it isn’t that close to home) YET our stores are just as bare. We’re 100% out of toilet paper in our stors too!! 🤦‍♀️

    1. I went to the nearest WalMart today and there was definitely some tension in the air. I saw some people stocking up on bottled water. There were a few things that seemed to be in short supply, but overall it was fairly normal. Paper goods, disinfectants and the like we’re nowhere to be seen, but besides that it was fine.

I also stoped at a local supermarket and things were a lot better there. I have a well stocked freezer, so I can ride out roughly a month, if I need to.

I have to go into the office both tomorrow and Saturday. We are preparing to have our workforce work from home. I still think that this is a big bunch of nothing, it time will tell.

    2. I’m certain of it. This is a tough virus, but I doubt that it’s any more tough than others we deal with on a regular basis. Tom Hanks seems to be taking a pragmatic approach, and I really appreciate that. He’s not going to die and neither is his wife. They’ll feel sick for a week or two and it will be all but forgotten in another month.

At my workplace, we have people self quarantining and that’s keeping me hopping, because I’m the point man in keeping them connected. I fully expect that more and more people will want to work from home, but I also suspect that this whole thing will dissipate once people realize that they aren’t going to get all that sick if they do happen to catch it.

I feel true empathy and concern for those who have been profoundly affected by this, but the relative number that have been so affected is small. Truthfully, I’m a lot more worried about Influenza than I am about COVID 19.

  5. Yes, I think we are being played, but then it could be a deliberate attempt to accomplish that reduction of the population that has been in the minds of many for a long time.

  6. I watched the President’s news conference today. Impressive the way he has mobilized the public and private entities to prepare for a pandemic. I especially like the way they are protecting the elderly. I personally think it is overkill (excuse the pun) but better safe than sorry. I believe God works ALL things together for good for His people, so maybe this contrived panic will rearrange our economic system in a way we are no longer relying on China for our antibiotics, etc.
