When was the last time you saw the referees brawling with each other?
Ah, sports! Sports build character. Sports prepare you for life. Wish I had a penny for every time I heard that, growing up!
Recently in a Colorado children’s basketball game (4th-graders), spectators had to swarm onto the court to break up a brawl–among the referees (https://www.mensjournal.com/news/police-investigating-referee-brawl-colorado-basketball)! At this writing, no one knows what touched off the fisticuffs: police are investigating. The brawlers left the building–ran away, by Jove–before they could be arrested. Meanwhile, they’re suspended from the league.
I played rec league basketball in high school and we had to be content with just one referee. I have never, in any sport, seen the guys in the striped shirts get embroiled in a punch-out.
Great example for the kiddies!
Again, it wasn’t the players, it wasn’t their parents–it was the referees rolling around on the floor. At least no one got bitten.
I’m not a believer in organized sports for children. Much better just to let them play. But I wonder if we can even do that anymore.
If children’s basketball isn’t worth fighting over, what is? 🙂 The world is becoming filled with overgrown children. Lakewood, CO. One of my old haunts.
