Cat vs. Drone

I don’t know why this should be, but I felt immensely satisfied when the cat finally knocked the stupid drone out of the air. Somehow that said to me, “B.S. will not rule the world. Cats won’t allow it.”

  1. I’m with the cat. This junk like AI, talking robots, and all the rest of the junk just irritates me. I guess I’m a cat, eh?

    3. The precarious situations that I fear is the incredible dependence on Cloud (Internet based) computing. The problem is that if your entire network is dependent upon being able to reach the Internet, you become very vulnerable if there is an Internet outage. What will happen if there’s a huge backbone outage and credit card processing grinds to a halt?

      When Personal Computers arrived, one of the chief advantages was that computers were autonomous. Your computer, your data, your stuff, and no one else’s. By having everything continually connected, the security risks can be massive. This is the world I work in, daily, and sometimes I find it worrisome. I’m not saying that people shouldn’t use the Internet, because I don’t feel that way, but I think we need to keep an eye cocked towards retaining the ability to operate, even if there is an Internet outage.

      A while back, one of my employers buildings was having some remodeling done by other tenants, and occasionally they caused Internet outages for everyone in the building. People had to be sent home, because of it.

    4. You know, that’s pretty scary! It sounds like our whole civilization is vulnerable–and that little glitches can mushroom into disasters.

    5. What I find frightening is that a failure such as this could hinder the efforts to correct it, just because so much of our economy would be affected. Remember the Volkswagen commercial; “how does the guy that drives the snowplow get to the snowplow?” How do you fix an Internet outage, when you rely upon remote administration which requires the Internet? I’m sure that there are contingency plans, but a wide, generalized outage could be pretty devastating.

  2. I’ve flown a drone, but I don’t think that they should be used as toys. There are definite practical uses for them, but as a toy it’s just annoying.
