Blue Whales Coming Back… Or Not?

Japan's new whaling 'mother ship' being built to travel as ...

Can’t give it up, can we?

Remember, back in the Seventies, how close the world’s great whales were to extinction? Remember that? The whaling industry seemed intent on wiping out whales. International conservation efforts had to be founded and funded–in a hurry. By 1998 there were only 2,000 blue whales left alive.

After several years’ study (2006-2021), Australian scientists report that blue whales seem to be recovering. There seems to be reason for rejoicing: the conservation crusade had succeeded (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/06/im-a-blue-whale-im-here-researchers-listen-with-delight-to-songs-that-hint-at-antarctic-resurgence#:~:text=New%20research%20suggests%20the%20population,Southern%20Ocean%20with%20growing%20regularity.).

However–!

Japan has just launched a new “whaling mother ship” to kill and process whales at sea (https://maritime-executive.com/article/japan-s-new-whaling-ship-raises-concerns-for-conservationists#:~:text=Japanese%20whaling%20industry%20has%20gained,based%20seafood%20company%20Kyodo%20Senpaku.). Yes, Japan is still whaling. They want their people eating whale meat. Or something like that.

The blue whale is the largest animal ever to live on earth. Once upon a time we humans almost wiped it out.

Now we’re going to try again?

I would hate to have to plead that case before God the Creator.
