I Told You it was Snowy and Cold in New Jersey!

  1. Interesting. Having been born in a place where October’s snow might persist until the next spring, this doesn’t seem like much of a problem, but I also lived for over a quarter of a century in place where heavy snows typically persisted on the ground less than a week (Denver) and having spent another quarter century in a place where, on average, our rare snowfalls tend to persist on the ground for a few hours, or even a few minutes, I can fully sympathize.

I remember only one “closed winter” in Colorado, caused by the infamous Christmas Eve Blizzard of 1982, which didn’t fully melt until the following spring, and then we had a shocking, almost unprecedented blizzard in mid May of ‘83 which mucked things up for a few more days. The inability of the city of Denver to clear this snow, because they literally did not have enough equipment, toppled a mostly admired Mayor of long standing and changed Denver civic affairs going forward. So yes, persistent snow on the ground can be a very big problem, when it happens in a place that isn’t geared towards such things. By way of contrast, the infamous Christmas Eve Blizzard of 1982 would not likely have even been a valid excuse for being late to work the next morning in Minneapolis; but Minneapolis has equipment and planning in place for snow emergencies which would be excessive, if not wasteful in climates where winters are less harsh.

All I can say is that it will melt … someday. 🙂

    1. There’s an old saying around here. If you can live in New Jersey you can live anywhere. We have pretty hot summers and pretty cold winters. But this winter took the cake.

    2. In Colorado, it can get well below 0 degrees F, and I’ve seen temperatures of 104 F. The amazing thing is how fast the weather can change in Colorado. I’ve personally experienced heavy shows in May, when it would be more normal to expect daytime highs of 80 F. I’ve heard tell of snow on July 4th. On the flip-flop, I’ve experienced summer like weather in the winter months, sometimes just a week or so after extremely cold weather.
