This man has since passed away. Fluffy lives with a relative.

That is an amazing story, but I believe it, entirely. Cats are intelligent. They are quite different from dogs, and not as likely to respond to verbal instructions, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t understand, or don’t care. I have a bond with my cat that is different from what I would have with a dog, but it’s real.
She understands some words; just yesterday, I walked up to her and said “outside” several times. When she recognized the word, she immediately ran to the front door, excited at the prospect of going out for a walk. Simple, but more than many people expect from a cat. She knows when I dress to go out to do yard work, and she knows when I dress to go into the city. She responds differently, I believe based upon the shoes I put on, work shoes versus dress or casual shoes. If I am going to work in the yard, she chooses an advised location, and then watches me through the window, but if I put on the shoes I wear to the city, she responds with disappointment, because she knows that I’ll be gone for hours.
Her favorite word is “bed”. As soon as I say “time for bed” she usually runs into the bedroom and stakes out the absolute center of the bed, then waits for me to lay down, at which time she curls up next to me and seems to enjoy the quietness which is bound to follow.
Hopefully, I’ll never go through what this poor fellow did, but I’m certain that she would help, if there was a way to. One of God’s greatest gifts are animals.
Our cat Henry would run to the bathroom (if you were in there) when the phone would ring. He would know you were supposed to answer it. He would have been a great cat for a hearing impaired person. He was a darling boy.
That’s impressive. An aunt had a dog that would alert her to the phone. She was quite elderly and hard of hearing, but her dog let her know right away, when a call came in.
