  1. There is a serious question as to whether the Eastern Cougar was ever a species distinct from the Western Cougar. Once again, wildlife officials seem to downplay the possibilities, but as this video demonstrates, their predictions do not seem to be accurate.

    Mountain Lions are my favorite wild animal. I live where Mountain Lions are fairly common, and I love it. They are rarely aggressive to humans and, IMHO, do more good than harm.

    They keep the deer population in check, and that is a real blessing, because as beautiful as the local Mule Deer are, they are problematic. Usually, Mountain Lions stay away from homes, but when the Deer population exploded, we started to get visits from Mountain Lions, and that has driven the deer back towards the wilds, where they belong.

    We can always tell when a Mountain Lion is nearby; every dog in the neighborhood will raise hell, barking wildly. Then paw prints will show up, or as happened a few months ago, during a very rare daytime visit, I saw a reddish-brown streak in my yard. Unless they are injured, it’s almost unheard of them not to flee at the sight of a human.

    They are also masters of stealth; you can be 20’ away from one and never know it. They will observe in silence, concealed by the flora, and will bolt as soon as they have the chance.

    If they keep the deer population under control, and as the video mentions, make the deer more wary, that is only a good thing. Even if they live nearby, you have a better chance of winning the Lottery than of ever being attacked by one.

    2. I really admire them. A Mountain Lion has left paw prints within 100’ of where I am sitting and that doesn’t bother me in the slightest. As I’ve said before, I am much more concerned about coyotes than I am about mountain lions. A Mountain Lion lived for years in a park within Los Angeles, without ever causing problems for anyone. I wouldn’t approach a Mountain Lion, and would advise anyone to keep their distance, but they tend to be non-threatening to humans unless something is very wrong.
