This is somewhat of a controversial matter. Conventional wisdom is that there are no Mountain Lions east of the Mississippi River, but sightings abound. A female with two cubs was filmed in Minnesota, recently, but they officials insist that the cubs were not bred there, even though that was actually (slightly) west of the Mississippi River.
There have been numerous sightings in New England, including at least one that was hit by a car, but the officials insist that there is no breeding population, even though there now exists evidence of female mountain lions in New England. Apparently mountain lions take a vow of celibacy when they move east. 🙂
We cannot know everything happening on this earth. While I appreciate that there are some sincere people trying to keep track of wildlife, trail cameras have proven some of these people wrong. I grew up being told that there were absolutely, positively, no Jaguars in the US. But trail cameras have detected them near where I live, and it wasn’t just one isolated sighting. 10-15 years ago, a hunter encountered one face to face, a bit east of here, and brought home photographic proof.
The wildlife officials insist that there is no breeding population here, and that’s feasible, because there is a wildlife sanctuary less than 100 miles from here, in the Republic of Mexico, where Jaguars are known to breed, but I have to wonder why no female Jaguars would come up this way. Lotsa deer around here to attract them.
