  1. That’s interesting. I don’t think that intelligence is ordinal, as in one species is more intelligent than another, because this is an apples to oranges comparison. Different species have different strengths and limitations. Monkeys and chimps have capabilities with their forelimbs which most animals do not. They are smart, but not able to do things that other species can do with ease.

    If I was talking about music or computer networks, I might be perceived as smart, but if I were talking about graphic art, no one would think that I was smart. It’s not my thing, so my opinions of that field are relatively elementary. The same holds true for animals, cats are smart at hunting certain types of prey, and at stealth, but they socialize much differently than dogs. It’s not that one species is better, or smarter than the other, but simply that they possess different strengths.

    My cat, IMHO, is very intelligent. She certainly has object permanence down pat. If there is cooked chicken in the fridge, she knows that it’s there, and remembers that for days on end.

    She’s not highly trainable, or particularly responsive to commands, but she has certainly trained me to do her bidding. 🙂

    2. They were put here to do different things, and they tend to be very smart at what they were made to do. Take, for example, horses, which are powerful, but can be trained to obey humans that they could easily overpower. I’ve even seen small children lead a horse. Animals are given wisdom by their maker, for their intended task.
