Imagine history without a Roman Empire. It came very near to happening.
As it was, thanks to stupid leadership, the Gauls occupied most of the city and burned most of it down. Had it gone just a tiny bit farther, there would have been no Rome at all. It took the city over 100 years to recover.
This fallen world never runs out of stupid smart people.
