Super-Spider!

The spider that set up shop in our kitchen window is still there and still gobbling up flies at a truly admirable pace. Yesterday she caught and finished off a lantern fly, at least twice her size–but he’s just spider-dinny now.

Admittedly it’s a little bit disgusting. A lot of people would just vacuum away the whole business. But flies were really vexing us when this little spider came along, and it strikes us as deeply ungrateful to molest her. If all the spiders outdoors were like her, we wouldn’t be bothered by flies.

Common House Spiders: House Spider Control & Information

When it gets to be over 90 degrees around here, huge swarms of flies hatch out and invade everybody’s homes. It happens every summer. Feh.

The other day I happened to notice a small spider web in a corner of our kitchen window, with a small spider in it. I was about to get rid of it when I decided to do something different. Let it stay. See what happens.

The next day the spider caught two flies! I am glad my confidence in her was not misplaced. Not that we want our home overrun with spiders or anything. It’s just so unexpected, wonderful, and glorious when anything, including a spider, works the way it should. If only all the spiders in this neighborhood were so efficient!

And my eyes are still dilated, so don’t expect any really long posts for a while.
