Historical note: “King Wenceslas” was Vaclav the Good, Duke of Bohemia, martyr and saint in the 10th century. His outstanding virtues moved the Church to declare him a king, posthumously. He is the patron saint of the Czech nation–but also a treasure held in common by all Christians.

Wow!! I love this song!! I wasn’t aware of the titile until now! I was actually thinking about this song yesterday or two days ago! I first heard this in the film The Polar Express, in which a hobo hums part of the song while playing his hurdy-gurdy.
How many know the feast of Stephen is December 26th – or even what this glorious carol is all about? Leave it to our fearless leader to give us the inside scoop on the ancient hymns – much obliged.
