Imagine a world in which Winston Churchill died in 1931.

An Appreciation: Churchill

Without Churchill, the Third Reich conquers all of Europe. The United States, if we survive at all, endures a state of perpetual siege–unless our own leaders, as so many of Britain’s were willing to do, enter into some kind of “understanding” with the Nazis.

Liberty is fragile. It’s at odds with Original Sin. Only by God’s providence do we have it; only by His providence do we keep it. There’s always someone lusting to take it away from us.

Remember that freedom is the gift of God, and no one has the right to take it from us.

  1. I was 9 years old when Churchill died and lacked perspective in these matters. I was perplexed by all of the fuss over an old man that talked funny and had an unusual appearance. It was truly a matter of some decades before I came to realize what an amazing gift he was to mankind. Our lives would be very different today if no one had seen what Churchill saw or acted in the manner Churchill acted. I have relatively few men I regard as heroes, but Winston Churchill is one of them.

It’s worth the time to learn about how he fought to prepare Britain to resist the Nazi plans for invasion. He fought an uphill battle against his own countrymen and was hindered by a Prime Minister whom had placed his faith in a treaty which wasn’t worth the value of the paper upon which it was written. He wasn’t particularly liked and was barely tolerated by many in the British government, but eventually they came to realize that he was the only hope they had.

This history of the twentieth century was profoundly affected by this hero.

    1. I’ll see if I can work it into my reading list. From what I know of that era in Churchill’s life, the title is a perfect description of what he faced. Being the smartest person in the room is frequently synonymous with being the loneliest person in the room.

  2. I didn’t know Churchill almost died in a car accident in America – wow! Larry Arn, the President of Hillsdale College is a Churchill scholar. God always provides the servants He needs and the means to carry out His purposes. I see President Trump as a King Cyrus who was used to help Israel reestablish itself in the Holy Land. He has done more the the Christian church and the Pro-Life movement than any President before him. Vote Trump 2020.
