This is a shout-out to one of my favorite stores ever–Metuchen News.
This little general store has weathered the lockdown/facemask/mandate storm, staying in business while so many others couldn’t. It’s a family-owned business, an Indian-American family: and they are very, very good at what they do.
When our supermarket was running short on all sorts of things–rubbing alcohol, toilet paper, paper towels, dish detergent–Metuchen News took up the slack. There aren’t many things you need that you can’t find there: and if they don’t have it, they’ll do their best to get it for you.
The family knows their customers, if not by name, at least by face and shopping habits. It’s a marvelously friendly place. It’s everything a small-town American store should be: it feels like someplace from my childhood. It has captured something that so many others have just let slip away.
May they prosper and stay in business for many, many years to come.
