How is it that cats and kittens can rough-house so vigorously and not wind up shredded into strips? I mean, yeesh, kittens’ claws are sharp! And their teeth are like needles. I don’t know how they do it.

Yes, kittens’ claws are sharp, like needles! One time our kitten was on my lap, and wanted to climb higher. I was wearing just a T shirt, one of his claws sunk a bit into my chest and left four drops of blood.
