A Dog With an Engineering Problem

I guess at some point we have to ask, What does he want with that stick? What are his plans for it?

When this problem was proposed to college students, 63.8% of them solved it after only a few tries.

A parrot got it in one.

  1. I watched a tiny bird figure out this problem while building a nest behind a tiny triangular gap in siding! It quickly realized it needed to hold the stick near the end and go in ahead of it, then angle the stick behind its body (parallel with its body’s length), and pulled through this long stick (2 – 3 x as long as the bird) that it was determined to use. Itsy bitsy brain, smarter than many, many dog brains. “Bird brain” is actually a compliment.
