Dogs are not good at getting away with stuff. It’s like they do it, suddenly realize they were wrong, and try to be very small and quiet–maybe the offended humans might not notice them.

Well, some dogs are as you say. We have one who is never apologetic about anythiing. She seems to think she is the real boss, and owes nobody anything. She has her good points, but also bad ones.
My iguana got caught short once (he was cage-trained) and not only acted upset–but also never got caught short again.
That toilet seat…ha, ha, ha… At times my dog acted just like that, when he was a bad dog.
