With an Assyrian invasion looming, Isaiah warned the people of Judah not to put their trust in Egypt: “Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean., it will pierce his hand: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him” (Isaiah 36:6).
It’s looking more and more like an accurate description of today’s Republican Party.
When I was active in politics in the 1990s, our county GOP chairman blew us off with “When I want your advice, I’ll ask for it.” We were only trying to help the party win an election now and then, but the party mucky-mucks weren’t interested. Being No. 2 didn’t make them try harder. That’s how we wound up with a town under one-party rule: no Republicans on the ballot anymore.
Thanks to what Democrats laughingly call “government,” our country is in deep trouble. You’d think Republicans would rally around Donald Trump to get us out from under a regular festival of misrule–broken borders, weaponized Justice Dept., transgender mania, censorship, inflation… the list goes on and on.
And the Republicans in Congress gird up their loins and pass a Democrat budget. Wasn’t there something about them being an opposition party? Nah–too much trouble.
They are a broken reed that pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it.
Ask God to send us leaders who can and will actually help us! It shouldn’t be Donald Trump just standing alone between us and the collapse of our republic. The history of Rome tells us how a perfectly good republic can be wrecked. Pray we can somehow stay clear of those already-charted shoals.
Psalm 146: “Put not your trust in princes or any son of man, in whom there is no help.”
But even aside from that, there really aren’t any “parties” to speak of, any more. There’s just a Uniparty, those in power whose goals are only what will keep them in power. And what keeps them in power is an ever-growing State. They have their fringe characters who put on a show, and it always seems that one faction or another is “winning” or “losing,” but when all is said and done, the Uniparty remains intact and flourishing — even the supposed “losers.” The only real losers are the rest of us.
I guess there are a lot of ways to ruin a republic.
Right after I posted my previous comment, I received the following Substack post from Emerald Robinson on the same subject. And I’m seeing more and more of it on what’s turning into a kind of conservative samizdat among the nontraditional platforms such as Substack and Rumble.

It’s in God’s hands. I pray for America, but have no idea of what would need to happen in order for things to improve.
One thing is indispensable: the permanent demise of the Democrat Party.
This is bigger than political parties. Democrats Vs. Republicans, has lost most of its meaning.
Well, they’re the only two parties we’ve got. One is evil and the other is stupid.
Kevin McCarthy had ended up being a broken reed and now he has been ousted because of it. It will be interesting to see who is really conservative and who is really establishment by who criticizes what Matt Gaetz has accomplished.
I think what we are seeing is the hand of God’s judgment. How could any one in their right mind think defunding the police is a good idea. Only those who have been made blind by the hand of God. So, those of us who still have our sight, must lead those who are now blind.
