Y’know what I’d like, about now?
I’d like to find, and sit down by, a cozy little pond, well off the busy street, with damsel flies resting on the lily pads, frogs calling, and a few turtles basking on a log. I’d like to look down and see pumpkinseeds (sunfish, to some) making nests and guarding their eggs. And maybe an egret or a heron wading back and forth, looking for lunch.
I’d like to sit down and watch. And listen. Maybe there’s a dove or two cooing in the trees.
God’s stuff, all of it. Life at work. A haven of sanity in an evil age. No crazy stupid stuff going on. Just life. Just Creation.
More valuable than we can imagine.
You just described my complex. God has really blessed me with so much of his creation.
I remember visiting a place like this when I was a kid. The owner’s son always invited me to
come down and “kick frogs in the pond”. We didn’t, but we could watch a lot of the living creatures there.
Nice, wasn’t it? Our own neighborhood pond has dried up.
So much of our world has become artificial, that the simple, basic joys of life are all but forgotten. I am blessed to live in a place where wildlife is abundant and I find that it brings me down to earth. Not much water around here, but many deer, quail, roadrunners, swifts, etc. In the last few days I’ve seen Desert Hares and Cottontails. During my bike ride. Always a treat to see them.
