‘Memory Lane’ Contest, Day 5

Please don’t tell me we’ve already run out of entries in this contest. Let’s get some action! Here, I’ll write up one more memory and hopefully inspire others.

After a heavy rain, the horseshoe pits in the playground next door, thanks to soil that was mostly clay, turned into pools of water that only drained very slowly.

That was our signal to break out the toy boats and stage epic naval battles. When we got a jigsaw we were able to promote a Monitor vs. Merrimack rematch. With the help of the saw, we made our own replicas. It was 1961, the Civil War Centennial. What a splash that made!

So let’s have some of your memories, folks. So far only a few of you have taken part. Come on, this is for everybody! And there’ll be a prize, so don’t be shy–you might win.

  1. Alright. Not really sure what’s worth it to share, but here goes: the story you shared above reminds me of playing in the backyard with my neighbor. There was this pussy willow tree that sat in our yard right at the fence. It was awesome to climb but its roots made this little fantasy wonderland that was just the right scale to stage little mock battles. It wasn’t historical battles, though. We had Star Wars figures and GIJoes and army men and He-Man and Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and all kinds of off-brand generic stuff—Yes, we played with the different IPs together. We didn’t care. 🙂 some of the best and simplest times.

I dislike the city, and don’t want to live there again if I can help it, but I do miss that tree and especially the neighbor kids I played with.

  2. Party lines and rotary phones. It was always hard to be the first caller to a radio station, when for some contest, the DJ would say, the first caller would win that day’s prize. And then came push button phones with redial.
