Just the other day we were wondering if killer whales were back to ramming fishing boats, as they did last year.
Yes, they’re back–again, in the waters off Gibraltar. They recently sunk a yacht valued at $128,680 (https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/killer-whales-sink-128-000-yacht-in-mediterranean-sea-in-harrowing-2-hour-attack-6201510). They kept it up for two hours (!) until they sank the boat. The three-man crew was rescued.
No one knows why the whales are doing this. One scientist suggested that it seems to be “some sort of play activity.” If it is, they’re playing mighty rough.
An elderly female orca is the suspected ringleader. But they can’t interrogate her, can they?
This is very strange. I can’t even imagine what could be behind this.
Sounds to me like we’ve way underestimated whales’ intelligence and psychology.
Very likely. There are some very interesting things happening, around the world, involving animals.
Inexplicable. Maybe this just happens at certain places in the ocean and remain isolated cases. I guess I will take having a yacht off my Bucket List 🙂
