This idea was old and senile when Plato trotted it out for The Republic–which wouldn’t have been any kind of republic at all, but only another one-party dictatorship run by sinners with swelled heads and itchy trigger fingers. There has never been a shortage of those, and never will be: Original Sin at work.
The price of liberty is eternal vigilance. We can all see what Obama’s doing. What we can’t see is what scares me more. The stuff you don’t see till it’s done.
It’s better to have a visible tyrant than hundreds (or thousands) of invisible bureaucrats.
Worse to have both.
The Internet has become a huge system for vacuuming up information, which can be evaluated (via computers) and concatenated to provide extremely accurate profiles. There’s no doubt in my mind that a very accurate profile of my tastes, habits, behaviors down to the most mundane matters could be assembled from my browsing, posts to this blog and my online shopping history.
Grocery stores want you to trade personal information in exchange for discounts, which are bogus, because what they are really doing is overcharging you if you don’t have one of their cards, which means that they want your info so badly that they are willing to pay for it. There’s no doubt in my mind that one could look at my various profiles and describe me to a T, including my drinking habits (rare to non-existent), my eating preferences, my travel habits, etc. I assure you that the goal is a total loss of privacy.

Good post, Lee – you’ve still have it! X-Presidents used to go away after serving as President, but not Obama – he thinks he is a god, and America can’t make it without him. He is an example of narcissism on steroids.
