Get A Load of This Headline

Are you ready for this? Here’s the headline.

Mr. Bean left his wife for a woman twice his age.

The actual text doesn’t follow the headline down the rabbit-hole. Comedian Rowan Atkinson, who plays Mr. Bean, is 62. His new wife is 32, not 124. No one is 124 years old.

The headline, etc., comes from Telegrafi, an Albanian news service.

I used to write headlines, as part of my job as a newspaper editor. Sometimes a mistake would happen–but nothing on the scale of this whopper.

Lately I’ve been wondering, “Doesn’t anyone know how to write news anymore?” Like, they give you a catchy headline and it turns out to have nothing to do with the text. I see that a lot, these days.

Read the news carefully. It might be drivel.

    1. That’s the problem. Plumbers and welders with tradesman skills are frequently doing better than people with degrees who find little that they can offer the job market. I had a coworker who spoke about his Master’s, constantly, privately admitted to me that he had pretty much bupkis, when it came to practical skills. It was hilarious, a number of years ago, when he was required to submit some information regarding developing a parcel of land, something he was allegedly educated in, but he had to ask for help from me, because he had zero ability to put his education to practical use.
