The freedom fighters in Texas had one cannon, just one, in the town of Gonzales; and they had a flag that defied Santa Ana to “Come and Take It.” The Mexicans, despite their overwhelming numbers, took the town but couldn’t take the cannon. The video will tell you the rest of the story.
Fast forward to 2025! After first invoking the primordial battle cry, “Come and Take It,” Texas Democrats… ran away. Upped stakes, scarpered, chickened out. No whisper of “Remember the Alamo.” Were they fleeing to save their lives? No: they were fleeing to avoid a quorum on a redistricting vote. And once they saw which way the wind was blowing, it was “Run away! Run away!”
A couple of them have since come back from skulking in Chicago. Legislators are supposed to legislate, not panic when it seems the vote won’t go their way. The governor has threatened to keep them out of the legislature for refusing to do their duty and carry on their proper function.
