An Ancient Hymn: ‘Be Thou My Vision’

When this old Irish hymn was new, the calendar had just passed the year 800 A.D. Christians are still singing it today, over a thousand years later: Be Thou My Vision, here sung by the Lebanon County Youth Choir. This hymn was played at my father’s funeral, and never fails to stir my soul.

‘Be Thou My Vision’

This ancient Irish hymn, sung here by Nathan Pacheco, dates back to the 8th century. I hope it moves you as it moves me.

‘Be Thou My Vision’

I haven’t posted this for quite a while–one of my favorites, Be Thou My Vision. This hymn comes to us from Ireland, back in the 8th century, and has never lost its power to stir our souls and remind us that we love our God.

Sing out louder, everybody, sing it louder: the times are evil, but our God is good.

The Beauty of Holiness: ‘Be Thou My Vision’

If we ever needed the Lord Our God to be our vision, we need Him now.

There are so many versions of this wonderful hymn, going back well over a thousand years. This one is sung by Alison Krauss.

Come, Lord Jesus–come!

‘Be Thou My Vision’

My aunt has been taken to the hospital again this morning, and I don’t know why , yet.

Meanwhile, here’s a hymn to fortify the spirit. I know I’ve posted it before, but permit me to repeat it. Be Thou My Vision–be Thou ever my vision, O Lord my God.

‘Be Thou My Vision’ in Gaelic

Here is this glorious ancient hymn in its original Irish language–well, Gaelic, at least. Languages can change a lot in 1,300 years.

This is one of those days when I don’t feel much at all like singing: all the more need for it, then. God will hear us, if we raise our voices and lift our hearts to Him.

Once More, ‘Be Thou My Vision’

Think about it–Christians have been singing this hymn since Charlemagne was a baby on his daddy’s knee. But this ancient Irish hymn still has great power to move us today, and many performers have offered up their own renditions of it.

I think I like it best with a tin whistle and a fiddle.

However it’s played, it’s a nice hymn to start the day.

Time Out! ‘Be Thou My Vision’

Let’s rinse out minds out after that last news item, shall we?

This ancient Irish hymn, from way back in the 8th century, gets requested all the time. It’s one of my favorites, so I’m always glad to post it. This version is by Jason Waller.

Think of it: just a few hundred years before this hymn was composed, the Irish were pagans and head-hunters.

May the Holy Spirit transform our nation!

By Popular Demand, ‘Be Thou My Vision’

This ancient irish hymn (8th century) is one of my all-time favorites. Readers keep asking for it and I keep playing it. There are so many variations on it: I hope you like this harp and violin arrangement by the Webb Family. I wish it had lyrics–but with this hymn you almost don’t need the lyrics. Let the Holy Spirit sing it to you.

Yes, We Do Requests! Hymn, ‘Be Thou My Vision’

Jaroc, you asked for this hymn, and I’m only too glad to post it here.

Be Thou My Vision is an ancient Irish hymn, and one of my all-time favorites. It deeply moves me every time I hear it.

I was kind of stuck for what to write about today. Scanning the news each morning can sometimes be a soul-deadening experience. I mean, really–Campus Sex Week? Have we really sunk to this?

But again, good advice for Christians:

Sing louder!

Our God is the God, an awesome God; and He hears us.
