Joseph Gilmore, substituting for the minister at a church in Philadelphia in 1862, inspired by Psalm 23, thought up and quickly jotted down the words to this hymn as he chatted with a deacon after services. His wife sent them in to a magazine. Some years later, having long forgotten all about it, Gilmore went to church one Sunday and found them singing the hymn he’d written–He Leadeth Me (here performed by the London Fox Singers). He hadn’t known the magazine had ever published it, let alone that it had wound up in the hymnal. (Source: Cyberhymnal.com )
