Krazy Kalifornia

So, if they can get about half a million more signatures on their petition, there’ll be a 2018 referendum to decide whether California should secede from the United States.

Tucker Carlson last night interviewed one of the leaders of the “Calexit” movement. The guy was quite candid about it. “If you [the rest of America] can think of a reason you want us to stay, I’d like to know about it.” That’s candid, and so is this: “This is California, not the United States. Our values are different… We disregard their [America’s] laws.”

Even more eye-popping is the spokesman’s glee over the “massive exodus” of middle-class families out of California. That’ll open up space for the next wave of really poor immigrants from Mexico. And, “they’ll be taking our values to other states”–values which they’ve just run away from. Uh, did anybody ever notice any Cuban exiles trying to set up marching and chowder societies for Castro?

So, let’s see if we understand this… California has the world’s fifth largest economy. The middle class is leaving, big-time, and is to be replaced by poor people from other countries. The middle class pays almost all the taxes, funding California’s gigantic welfare programs. Like, if all the people who are paying for the party, well, go away… how are they gonna keep paying for the party?

Meanwhile, I’m trying to think of a reason, any reason, why I’d want California not to secede.

I’ve heard talk of California being split, the coastal regions seceding while the rest of the state remains part of the US. Frankly, I’m all for it.

Reason not to secede? Uh, well, let’s see…. Okay, how about this: If Oregon and Washington join the secession, we’ll be landlocked on the west? Or how about this: It’ll mean more funding required to build the border wall northward from Mexico?

Can’t think of much else, except that the cry will go up for foreign aid to the now-starving hordes of Third World California.

“the cry will go up for foreign aid to the now-starving hordes of Third World California.”

The place is already on its way to the third world. While they live it up on the coast, restrictive water policies have badly damaged the agricultural economy further inland. I drove I-5 from the Oregon border to the San Fernando Valley a while back and the sight of devastated orchards was quite common. They are doing it to themselves and, apparently don’t have the sense required to realize that agriculture sustains them.

The last time we had states secede there was a civil war. Do they really want that again?

As a practical matter, it would be all but impossible for them to secede. The economies of California and the rest of the US are far too entwined for it to work. That doesn’t mean that there are people out there willing to try it.

Most Californians that I’ve met are solid citizens with positive values. I feel safe in saying that the majority are relatively conservative in their views, Sadly, the very vocal minority seems to hold sway much of the time. If they can make the conservatives feel outnumbered they have already won half the battle.

Would you fight to keep California in the Union? Would anybody?

Nope. Not me. For myriad reasons, most of which are obvious. Do you suppose it would count if I signed their petition? By the way, if California becomes the ‘Country of California’, will they need visas to travel through the U.S.? LOL!

Not really, maybe it would be better if they had their own country where they can run all the social experiments their hearts desire. Of course when things go bad, as they ultimately will, they would just relocate to our side and create the same mess all over again.
