A Pet You Never Thought Of Having

It has nice, soft fur; but it also has a duck’s bill, and lays eggs. The males have poisonous spurs in their heels that can really ruin your day, if you annoy them. It lives in the water and waddles around on land. And it’s kind of hard to type it correctly.

It is, of course, the duck-billed platypus, from Australia. As you can see, this female platypus is nice to handle and seems quite affectionate.

You can’t just waltz into Pet Smart and buy one, though. Probably you can’t do that even in Australia.

Now watch–it’ll turn out that at least one of you has a pet platypus and people will think I don’t know what I’m talking about.

  1. Wow, I would never have thought of having one of those as a pet, and even if I had, I would have no idea where to acquire one. It looks rather nice,
    but … I don’t know.

  2. Yes we had the badger, but she wasn’t one to hold and cuddle. She was in a pen and I loved feeding here and watching her jump up and down with excitement. Also, my husband took her on a leash and walked her around town, around in the orchard, and even into the local tavern/ café where she entertained the people, but she was definitely not a cuddler.

  3. I think God created the Platypus as a joke on taxonomists. I have to say, it sure looked like an appealing little critter. I guess almost all of God’s creatures appreciate being treated kindly and gently. Best not to try that with Gila Monsters or Mojave Rattlers, however. 🙂

    1. They had a Gila monster at the Trailside Museum, here in Jersey, and the keeper was very fond of it: quite a pleasant animal to work with, she said.
