Nothing left but ruins
Lest we forget…
Once upon a time, long ago, a great civilization throve along the banks of the Indus River.
It has been so thoroughly erased from history, it might as well not have existed at all.
This civilization existed contemporaneously with those of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China. We know they traded by land and sea. But we don’t know their language, we can’t read their writing, and we don’t know the name of a single person among the millions who must have lived there. We don’t even have a legend or a folk-tale.
Will the same thing be said, someday, of our globalist fat-headed humanist civilization?
It sounds like a possibility, but the Apostle Peter tells us that the earth will be cleansed by fire and that God will re-create it: the new heaven and new earth.
The Bible account centers on the Middle East, especially Israel. It could be that other civilizations were within God’s scope of interest, but not recorded in the Bible. When a certain degree of depravity is reached, civilizations have a way of disappearing. It may be passive on God’s part; perhaps they just collapse under their own weight. But there are instances in the Bible where various civilizations were Divinely judged. The Hittites and the ancient Egyptians are perfect examples.
The sin of the Hittites was so great that the Bible refers to them as being vomited out of the land. The Egyptians mistreated the offspring of Abraham and exploited them as slaves. When Pharaoh refused to let them leave, the nation suffered 10 plagues, and eventually the death of every firstborn in Egypt. When the Israelites left, they were given just about everything of value in the land of Egypt. The people didn’t want any more plagues or any more deaths, and were willing to give the Israelites pretty much everything that wasn’t nailed down. Egypt’s time as a world power ended, abruptly.
We don’t know what happened in the Indus Valley, but it’s possible that they brought the demise of their civilization upon themselves. Our civilization is at an inflection point, and I’m not optimistic.
The latest theory is that the courses of the major rivers changed, distancing themselves from the cities which were left without water and had to be abandoned. But of course no one knows for sure. Not one word, not one name, has survived.
