The gaudiest cat toy you can buy rates a poor second to the cardboard box it came in. Brown paper bags go over pretty big; but if there’s a cardboard box around, your cat just has to have it. Even if it’s not big enough to get into.

I don’t know what it is about felines and boxes, but it is a very consistent part of their behavior. I’ve seen videos of tigers playing in boxes, and my favorite mountain lion, Messi, has been known to find his way into packing boxes, and to act pretty much identically to a house cat, except on a much larger scale. No boxes are allowed in this house without a thorough test as an elaborate cat toy.
My two Siamese fought like tigers if there was only one box. I tried to keep more than one on hand. Didn’t guarantee there would be no fighting over them, though.
