By Request, ‘He Is My Defense’

We have a hymn request from Erlene–He Is My Defense, adapted from Psalm 62 by Marty Goetz. We often wish we could hear what David’s psalms sounded like. Maybe something like this.

  1. Thank you. I can imagine how it might have been for David, a lover of the Lord who had given him the musical talent, and who had so much time to meditate and sing to the Lord in all those times when he was alone with only a herd of sheep.

    1. I believe that animals notice, and appreciate music. There are plenty of YouTube videos of animals, both domestic and wild, being attracted to someone playing live music. My cat loves music. Some years ago, I woke up in the middle of the night and, knowing that I couldn’t get back to sleep immediately, I grabbed a guitar and played quietly, in the dark. After a little while, I became aware that she was sitting about 1 foot away from me, directly facing my (unplugged) Fender Telecaster, taking it in.

Another numerous example goes back some years, when one of my guitar students spoke effusively about a Jeff Beck album, called Wired. Wired was a Jazz-Rock Fusion album with highly distorted guitar, and not the sort of music I was inclined to listen to. When my cats heard this, they became alarmed and ran into another room. Cats, at times, have better taste in music, than humans. 🙂

    2. Keep practicing. 🙂

While animals can appreciate music, they perceive their senses differently from humans, and I suspect that the harmonica sounds like an animal in distress to a cat.
