It couldn’t be… could it?
People all over the world have believed in giants. Were these super-sized humans ever real?
I can’t think of an ancient or medieval culture whose people didn’t believe in giants. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire–so they say. But shouldn’t there also be some bones, artifacts, or giant-friendly houses? How is it that we’ve found no physical trace of something that everybody, once upon a time, believed was real?
Just another one of those things we’ll never know.
Lee – please refer to the Old Testament, especially Genesis Chapter 6. YES, there WERE giants. And in our “modern” world that worships ONLY “science” and allows for nothing else to rival it, the archeological evidence in finding bones, etc. has been HIDDEN from the world. Our western governments have been extremely sensitive to allow anything that might disturb their “scientific” view of what the public is allowed to know about. The OT tells of how, when the Jewish people settled their land under Joshua, they were instructed BY THE LORD to destroy these populations of half human and half ??? that had brought giants among other things into the land that the Lord was giving to the Jewish people. But…our seminaries and pulpits today, let alone our secular universities, don’t teach or admit that these histories are real – yes, there were (and might still be) giants in human histories.
Remember when the Hebrews were nearing the promised land and one man from each tribe went to scout out the land- out of the 12, only Joshua and Caleb were trusting God to get
them in, but the 10 others were too frightened to try, because of the giants that considered them way too small to give them trouble and they chickened out
Genesis 6 tells us that the Nephilim were on the earth in the days of Noah, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. There are a variety of interpretations of this, but the text at Jude 1:6 seems to support that the “sons of God” were angels who left their proper dwelling place in the heavens and corrupted the human race with hybrids. I am personally skeptical of claims that there were hybrid humans 30’ tall, but Goliath was said to have been about 9’ 9”, and that’s plenty big. The tallest man I’ve ever seen was between 7’6” and 8’ 1”, depending upon whom you believe, and I can tell you, he was impressive.
Accepting the Bible as true, I can believe that there were some decidedly larger than average peoples on the earth, quite possible due to misbehavior on the part of rebellious angels, and Jude 1, again, speaks of these angels as being kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.
In recent years, I’ve given attention to the theory of the late Dr. Michael Heiser, regarding spirit creatures who have ruled places on the earth as principalities, allowed into this position since God divided the nations at Babel. I’m not dogmatic about it, but the idea certainly makes sense in light of several scriptural passages, such as Daniel being told by Michael that he had been delayed by the Prince of Persia, and Paul’s reference to our struggle being against unseen rulers/principalities.
Ultimately, while the Bible provides much vital information, there is much more that will be learned when Christ returns. Until then, we can take note of these things and be alert as we observe all that is happening in our day.
I always thought those scouts’ claims of seeing giants were hysteria and extreme demoralization… not to mention exaggeration.
It’s all in how we interpret it. I was of the same mind, for many years, but more recently, I’ve come to the conclusion that there was more to it than that. The record of battles tells of of some pretty impressive feats, and they were done in the power of the LORD, Yahweh.
Were giants ever real? I would say, for those who read and study their Bibles, which I believe you do, I find it a bit strange, that you have asked that question. But no, it’s not just another one of those things we’ll never know, for we do know, for sure, there were. And we know about some of their physical features, for the scriptures teach us. Great strength, extra fingers and toes, and great stature. “And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant” (II Sam. 21:20). You will also find this account in I Chro. 20, of David and his men fighting with giants and subduing them.
What is interesting about many of the accounts of giants down through history, the physical features described, are the same as found in the Bible, great strength, 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot.
The spies also saw the sons of Anak, giants in the land of Canaan, and it scared them. Num.13:33. King Og was about twelve feet in height. Such a big man needed a large bed. Deut. 3:11.
And of course, we all know about Goliath, a man about 10’ tall. King Saul himself, was close to 7’ tall, and he was never called a giant. Unless the Israelites were all dwarfs or midgets, remember Saul stood head and shoulders taller than any of them. And even he was afraid of the giant Goliath.

The main reason I know giants were real, is the same reason I know Jesus loves me, for the Bible tells me so.
